Planning a Beer-Themed Getaway

Do you love beer? If so, then a beer-themed getaway might be just what the doctor ordered! If you think that you’ll be limited to “pub crawls” or using smartphone apps to locate a decent bar during a vacation, there’s actually a lot more that you can enjoy. In fact, there are some prime areas for exploration and enjoyment that bear checking out. What’s on tap for those adventurers interested in a beer-flavored getaway?

Milwaukee: Beer Capital of the US

When you think of beer and brewing, chances are good that Milwaukee is going to come to mind. After all, the city has been the center of the US brewing industry for a very long time. MillerCoors is located downtown and you can take a tour of it. That also includes a look at the deep caves where the beer was once stored and kept cool. Lakefront Brewery is another good tour to take when you’re in the area and the brewery boat tours are also fun ways to explore the history and heritage of beer.

Saint Louis: Home of Anheuser-Busch

If Budweiser is your beer of choice (or you’re just interested in history), then Saint Louis is a great place to visit. You can enjoy a free tour at the brewery and even watch them use the direct yeast strain from Adolphus Busch’s first brewing efforts back in the 1800s.

There’s also a more comprehensive tour on offer that lasts for 90 minutes and costs $25, and all tours close out with a sample of the brewery’s offerings. While you’re in town, you should also stop by the John Lemp mansion (now a restaurant and B&B) to enjoy more brewing history.

Kohler: The American Club Resort

If you’re willing to travel to Wisconsin, then you’ll find that the American Club resort in Kohler is an excellent place to go. In addition to some stunning scenery, great golf and an amazing spa, you’ll find three pub/restaurants on property that specialize in craft beer. One option that you’ll love is the newly offered Jigger Ale from Scotland. The American Club resort is the only place that you can buy a pint of this amber ale on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you’ll be traveling around Memorial Day, you should also make sure you check out the annual Kohler Festival of Beer, which brings in travelers from far and wide to sample beers from around the world and enjoy the Cheers to Beers party on Saturday night of the event.
